InterRailing: Keszthely & Lake Balaton

We decided we wanted to see a more 'authentic' side of Hungary than the tourist attractions of the capital, so we found a nice little lakeside resort town on the shores of Balaton, the largest lake in central Europe. The town ended up being a popular holiday destination for Germans, with all signs and menus written in Hungarian, then German, then English. It was a nice alternative to the bigger towns which seemed to attract too many people, and would probably have been more expensive and overcrowded. We found a nice artificial beach and relaxed for a couple days.

We stayed in a little youth hostel type place, where we had a twin room with a bathroom next door and shared living room, then we decided to stay an extra night and had a 6 bed room to ourselves. We made the poor decision to try and cook in the microwave one night- this backfired hugely and we ended up with a melted plate and a sloppy mess of raw pasta. Eating out proved to be the better way to go, especially with many restaurants charging very reasonable prices.

Really into our yoghurt.

Easily pronounced place names are Hungary's trademark

Our lodgings

Evening walk into the main square

The pier!

I forgot what silly name they gave this machine, but it was funny...something to do with Dante maybe

Man made beach was the only real option unfortunately.

Bug! Aaah.

Crazy water activity where you roll around on the surface of the water in a giant bubble.

Delicious country-flavoured yoghurts!

Pretty Church on our walk home from the beach

Before dinner- feeling hopeful

Midway through the dinner-making process; feeling like it's not going well if you've melted a hole into the plate.

Sam trying to avoid finishing the sloppy mess of **** that was dinner.

Palace grounds near our lodgings

The palace

Ice cream time already

Dinner on the last night- Sam isn't there because he had to go on an ATM hunt...

Interesting statue of a small naked child

We decided to stay an extra night and got given a six-bed room to ourselves!
